Walker's Summer Music & Movies celebrates legendary director's work

Published July 17, 2005

Hard-drinking director Nicholas Ray was fired from the 1963 epic "55
Days at Peking" after collapsing in a stupor. Thereafter, the
Wisconsin-born poet of noir desperation spent the final two decades of his life
banished from Hollywood. His dark, subversive melodramas were out of
place in the big studios.

He showed confident, old-school patriarchs such as Humphrey Bogart,
James Mason and Charlton Heston at their most vulnerable ("In a Lonely
Place,"Bigger Than Life" and "55 Days in Peking"). He made James Dean the
poster boy for a mixed-up generation in 1955's"Rebel Without a Cause,"
and he gave the tough-guy roles to Joan Crawford and Mercedes
McCambridge in his 1954 feminist gothic western "Johnny Guitar."

Ray's movies anticipated the independent-film movement of the '60s and
'70s, when westerns, crime sagas and youth movies were allowed -- and
even expected -- to express their creators' idiosyncrasies. He created a
sort of self-portrait in 1950 with "In a Lonely Place," starring Bogart
as Dixon Steele, a cynical screenwriter whose fierce scorn has many
targets: movie industry "popcorn salesmen," the film-going public, his
enemies, even his allies.

Ray's scathing attacks on mainstream American values and moviemaking
formulas were surely destined to end in a crack-up. They arrived before
audiences were prepared to digest them.

Walker Art Center's annual Summer Music & Movies series will screen six
of Ray's films in Loring Park on Monday nights through Aug. 22. The
free programs begin at dusk, with local musical acts preceding the
screenings.

Colin Covert and Chris Riemenschneider

July 18

"Knock on Any Door" stars Humphrey Bogart as a defense lawyer whose
poor handling of a criminal case years earlier triggered a chain of events
that put his latest client on trial for murder. Ray's 1949 debut film
features forceful arguments about the social causes of crime as Bogart
struggles to persuade the jury that his juvenile-delinquent defendant
was a victim of forces beyond his control. You can find a potential
killer, he warns them, when you knock on any door.

Music: Issa Bagayogo, a West African innovator who blends world-beat
and electronic music.

July 25

"In a Lonely Place" (1950) reunites Ray and Bogart in a murder mystery
whose hero is not altogether certain he's innocent. As a self-loathing
alcoholic screenwriter suspected of killing a hat-check girl, Bogart
has reason to suspect that he might have committed the murder during a
booze blackout. Gloria Grahame, whose marriage to Ray disintegrated
during filming, plays Bogart's alibi, and their strained relationship
undermines the Hollywood myth of all-redeeming romance.

Music: Doomtree, the local hip-hop crew featuring P. O.S. and Sims.

Aug. 1

"Rebel Without a Cause" (1955) continued Ray's identification with
marginalized characters, this time rebellious and alienated youth. Although
James Dean's troubles with his milquetoast father seem quaint in light
of today's drugs and drive-by shootings, he vividly captured teen angst
long before it was a household term. The cliffside hot-rod chicken run
eerily foreshadowed Dean's death at the wheel of his Porsche on Sept.
30, 1955, a month before the film was released.

Music: Teenage electro-punks Melodious Owl.

Aug. 8

"Bigger Than Life" (1956) gives us James Mason as Ed Avery, a
hardworking suburbanite desperately striving to keep up with the Joneses. When
he's prescribed a new "miracle drug" for his crippling anxiety-induced
pains, Ed becomes assertive and assured, then overbearing, then
borderline psycho. He becomes a win-at-all-costs superachiever, spending beyond
his means, pushing callous schemes and, finally, deciding he must kill
his disappointing son just as Abraham planned to sacrifice Isaac. When
his frantic wife points out that God changed his mind and spared Isaac,
Mason bellows, "God was wrong!" A blistering critique of midcentury
America's attitudes about success.

Music: Thunder in the Valley, a rising piano-fueled indie-rock band.

Aug. 15

In "The Lusty Men," Robert Mitchum plays Jeff McCloud, a washed-up
rodeo star who gets a last chance at big money by tutoring a headstrong
newcomer on the circuit. The film, released in 1952, is a sad, cautionary
tale about the corrupting nature of success as Jeff's protégé is
tainted by the allure of cowboy groupies and easy money. When his fleeting
fame is gone, all he has left is a lonely limp through a vacant arena
blowing with tumbleweeds of trash.

Music: The hymnodically diverse House of Mercy Band, playing a blend of
Americana, roots and gospel.

Aug. 22

The strange lynch-mob western "Johnny Guitar" (1954) has been
interpreted as a rethinking of gender stereotypes, a social commentary against
McCarthy-era witch hunts, and a bizarre psychological study of a
frontier dominatrix. Joan Crawford stars as Vienna, a saloon keeper with a
powerful hold on a frontier town that will soon become a prosperous
railroad stop. Her bitter adversary Emma (Mercedes McCambridge) blames Vienna
for leading a stagecoach robbery that killed her brother and will stop
at nothing to ruin her. With its lurid color photography and the
kinky/campy overtones of its pants-wearing leading ladies, "Johnny Guitar" is
a lot of fun, although sometimes unintentionally funny.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Catching Rays: Outdoor Films & Music

What: Films by Nicholas Ray and a diverse lineup of musical guests.

When: Mondays through Aug. 22 (music begins at 7 p.m., movies at dusk).

July 18: ""Knock on Any Door""/ Issa Bagayogo.

July 25: ""In a Lonely Place""/Doomtree.

Aug. 1: ""Rebel Without a Cause""/ Melodious Owl.

Aug. 8: ""Bigger Than Life""/Thunder in the Valley.

Aug. 15: ""The Lusty Men""/House of Mercy Band.

Aug. 22: ""Johnny Guitar""/Arcwelder.

Where: Loring Park, Mpls.
